Department Of Justice Files Notice Of Appeal Regarding PTIN Case

On Wednesday, September 6, 2017, the Department of Justice filed a notice on behalf of the IRS regarding the agency’s intent to appeal the final judgement in the Steel case.  As you are aware, this decision, issued last June,  not only banned the IRS from charging fees for PTIN (preparer tax identification number) registrations or renewals, but also required them to refund the millions in fees already collected.

As a result of the US District Court’s decision in Steel, the IRS briefly halted online PTIN registration (June 21-24, 2017) but quickly resumed the registration with no fee.

IRS will not refund any previously collected fees until a final decision is made on their appeal.
