WEBINAR: Capital Gain or Ordinary Income? Tax Implications of Asset Sales
2 Hours Federal Tax; IRS:
Correctly distinguishing between capital gain and ordinary income is critical to accurate tax reporting—and can significantly impact a taxpayer’s liability. With rate differentials exceeding 20%, misclassification can lead to costly errors or missed opportunities.
This course provides intermediate-level training on identifying capital assets and determining the proper tax treatment of asset sales. Through practical examples and case studies—including real estate, intellectual property, and internet-based transactions—participants will learn how to apply the definitions and exceptions under §1221 and §1222. The course also explores the five different long-term capital gain rates, the mechanics of gain calculation, and the application of the 3.8% Medicare tax on net investment income.
